 "Apa" or "Apashka" in Kazakh language means - granny. That's how people address a shaman woman that is living in Ungurtas village, Kazakhstan. Ungurtas is located very close to Kirgyzian boarder, on the way from Almaty to Bishkek. Originally from Turkistan, Apa was told by the spirits to find a particular mountain. Pavel Prokopchik was born in Budyonnovsk (Russia) in 1982. Grew up in Latvia, which was a part of Soviet Union at that time. Starting from the year 2001 living in The Netherlands. Currently residing in Amsterdam.


2002-2006 Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering at the technical university of Delft

2005-2009 Bachelor degree in photography at Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague.

Work experience

2004-2008 Freelance photographer for a local newspaper "Delta".

2007-2009 Assisting, digital post-production and image manipulation for Morad Bouchakour
