Nearly thirteen miles long, Broad Street is one of Philadelphia's most prominent streets, threading together what makes the city famously its own, its neighborhoods. “The Orange Line” is an on-going documentary project exploring the northern half of the subway line that runs along underneath Broad Street.
During my time spent at each different station, I quickly realized the stations themselves really just served as a starting point for me to expand into its surrounding environment, to truly explore its neighborhood and its neighbors. The camera became a curiously welcomed element to an environment otherwise normally would not have seen. It was the subjects themselves that transpired the series into a more unexpectedly purposeful project.
I see the light in people. That is why I photograph them. I already saw the light in the people I photographed, but did they? I started to return to the sites I shot at to give those I photographed a copy of their print. By doing so, I was able to share in this light I saw in them, that perhaps even they were not able to see in themselves.
During dark and trying times, "The Orange Line" is a testament to the bright omniscience of the human spirit no matter where you are in the world. It shows the importance of seeing the hope in despair, to looking for the light that exudes from us all.
